ISLAMABAD, December 15 – A Pakistani national was killed in a tragic boat accident off the coast of Greece, while 47 others were rescued, the Foreign Office (FO) confirmed on Friday. The ill-fated ship, reportedly carrying migrants from various countries, capsized amid rough weather conditions, putting several lives at risk.
The Pakistani Foreign Office issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of life. "We are saddened to confirm that one Pakistani national has lost his life in this tragic incident, while 47 others have been rescued and are safe," the statement said. Efforts are on to determine if there were more Pakistanis on board.
The boat, which reportedly departed from Turkish shores, was bound for Europe, with more than 70 people on board. It overturned near the Greek island of Kalymnos, a notorious crossing point for migrants trying to reach Europe. Greek authorities, with the help of the coast guard and rescue teams, launched an extensive operation to rescue those on board.
According to Greek media, rough seas and overcrowding contributed to the tragedy. Survivors said the boat was unseaworthy and lacked necessary safety measures, a common problem on such perilous journeys.
Pakistan's response
The Foreign Office confirmed that it was working with Greek authorities to provide assistance to the rescued Pakistani nationals and repatriate the body of the deceased. Pakistani embassies in Athens and Ankara have been instructed to liaise with local authorities and assist in the investigation.
"The Government of Pakistan is in touch with the families of the victims to provide necessary assistance," the Foreign Office spokesperson added.
A wider refugee crisis
The tragic incident highlights the ongoing migrant crisis in the Mediterranean, where thousands of people risk their lives every year in search of better opportunities in Europe. Many people fall prey to human traffickers who take advantage of their desperation, often with disastrous results.
In recent years, Pakistan has seen an increase in the number of its citizens trying to cross illegal routes to Europe. The government is working to curb illegal migration and raise awareness about its dangers.
The incident has once again brought the plight of migrants to the fore, prompting international organizations to call for tougher action against human trafficking networks. It also emphasizes the need for a collaborative global approach to address the root causes of migration, including poverty, conflict and lack of opportunity in refugees' home countries.
As investigations continue, Pakistan and Greece are expected to strengthen efforts to prevent such tragedies in the future. The loss of even one life underscores the urgency of addressing this humanitarian crisis.
