The national institute of health's regional reference laboratory confirmed the virus in an 18-month old girl from Union Council Amakhel in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Tank district,
The News international reported.


According to health officials in Khyber District, a region that remains vulnerable due to low immunization coverage and vaccine refusal in some communities, the child reportedly showed symptoms of paralysis and was later diagnosed with wild poliovirus.


This is the ninth case of polio reported from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa this year, making it the worst-affected province. Other cases have been reported in Balochistan and Sindh.

Health authorities have stepped up their efforts to contain the virus, launching emergency vaccination campaigns in high-risk areas. Officials from the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) have stressed the importance of continued support from parents and communities to ensure that every child under the age of five is vaccinated.


Despite great progress in recent years, Pakistan remains one of only two countries in the world, along with Afghanistan, where polio is still endemic. Experts have warned that failure to completely eradicate the virus could lead to a global resurgence.
