Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have formally approached the Islamabad High Court seeking an early hearing on their appeals to suspend their sentences in a high-profile £190 million corruption case.

The couple, through their legal counsel, submitted an application on Monday requesting that the court prioritize their appeals as they claim that the decision contains significant legal flaws and that there are political motives behind the case.

The case, which involved the alleged misuse of £190 million worth of funds recovered from the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), resulted in both Khan and Bushra Bibi being sentenced to 14 years each. The former prime minister was accused of abusing his position to illegally benefit a real estate tycoon in an accountability court ruling delivered earlier this year.

Legal basis and urgency

According to a petition filed by Khan’s legal team, the conviction was handed down without giving the defense sufficient time to present arguments. The petition argued that the court failed to consider key evidence and that the case was influenced by political pressure aimed at distancing the former prime minister from active politics.

Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated in Adiala Jail, has repeatedly denied the charges, calling them “baseless” and “a conspiracy to keep him out of the elections.” His wife Bushra Bibi, who was convicted in the same case, is under house arrest following a court order.

A statement issued by Khan’s political party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), said that “the conviction is not just a legal injustice; it is a direct attack on democracy and the will of the people.

Islamabad High Court has not yet set a date for the hearing, but legal experts believe the matter could be taken up soon, given the high-profile nature of the case and its implications for the upcoming political landscape.

Meanwhile, PTI supporters have continued to rally behind their leader, demanding a transparent process and an end to what they call “political victimization.

Case is one of several legal challenges facing Imran Khan, who has been embroiled in multiple cases since he was removed from office in 2022.
